We had a great session at the Baytree Centre in Brixton with women from South America, Yemen, Sudan and Syria, designing stamps to be included in a fabric inspired by the shared stories of motherhood during migration and their experiences of adjusting to life in London.
Baytree Centre
goodmakes X the BayTree Centre, Brixton
goodmakes is delighted to announce a collaboration with the BayTree Centre in Brixton where we will be running narrative textile design workshops not only with mothers, but with teenage girls who are waiting to get places at school. The workshops will start in April 2018.
The Baytree Centre is a social inclusion charity (Registered Charity No 1175145) for women and girls based in the heart of Brixton, London.
Those who access the Centre face multiple barriers to inclusion, identified by the women and girls themselves as: lack of English language skills; lack of opportunities to learn in culturally appropriate settings; inability to access employment opportunities; poverty; poor housing; isolation; depression; racism and discrimination (including religious discrimination); abusive homes; family breakdown and a lack of family support and structure.
I am so excited about this collaboration as I think goodmakes and the Baytree centre have similar aims and values and I am proud to be able to support their work with women and teenage girls.
